Lalor House, Richmond
Heritage Refurbishment and Addition
Lalor house was built in 1888 for Dr. Joseph Peter Lalor, the residence is an exemplar of Boom Style Classicism, characterised by its exaggerated classical motifs and ornate detailing.
The restoration of Lalor House focused on preserving its historical and architectural integrity while catering for modern living today. Significant features such as marble fireplaces, grand reception room and the exposure of a hand painted mural were retained to reflect the building’s original character. The extension to the original part of the house included large light filled living spaces characterised by the distinct difference in architectural design from heritage to modern. The restoration efforts have ensured that Lalor House remains a prominent example of Victorian-era architecture in Melbourne, preserving it’s historical significance for future generations.
